Planning applications rise in North but fall in London

The Government’s quarterly review of planning applications has shown a marked increase in applications received in the North of England, but a decline in London.

Around 142,000 applications were received in the first quarter of 2001, taking the total for the year 2000/01 to 545,000 – the largest such figure since 1989/90.

The main increases were in the North East and the East Midlands, up by 7% each, and the North West, up by 6%. However, applications in London decreased by 3%.

Planning decisions increased across the board to 118,000 in the first quarter, a 4% increase on last year. The Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions attributed the rise to an increase in the number of decisions on householder applications to 52,000 this quarter, up 3000 on last year.
