Warm welcome for GLA social housing policy

Ken Livingstone’s Towards the London Plan consultation document has been commended for its approach to social housing by leading housing groups.

The London Housing Federation, the Chartered Institute of Housing and two charities, Shelter and ROOM, said in a joint reply to the document that they welcomed the commitment to meet housing need in the document, also known as the draft Spatial Development Strategy.

Dino Patel, policy officer at LHF, said: “Demand for housing in London, especially affordable housing, far exceeds supply. The Mayor’s Spatial Development Strategy presents the housing sector with the best opportunity.”

However the groups also urged the GLA to carry out a new housing needs survey for the final London Plan, and asked for a commitment to ensure that new housing would not simply be confined to certain areas.
