Westminster council calls for London Plan rethink

Westminster council has called on London Mayor Ken Livingstone to recognise the “unique” nature of Westminster and to avoid “one-size-fits-all” planning policies for the capital.

Responding to the mayor’s Towards the London Plan consultation document, Westminster’s chair of planning Angela Hooper said: “The Plan must recognise the unique nature of Westminster. Any attempt to impose a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution on boroughs would be disastrous for London in general and Westminster in particular.”

At the same time, the council is disputing recent research by Nottingham Trent University which claims that Westminster could support 50% affordable housing, saying that land prices would make the target “unviable”.

The council is also questioning the proposed pooling of London-wide planning gain, and the establishment of a regional framework for co-ordinating section 106 agreements.
