Wembley stadium receives £17m Livingstone boost

London Mayor Ken Livingstone will provide £17m in funding for Wembley national stadium’s infrastructure costs in a bid to persuade the Football Association (FA) to choose the scheme.

The announcement follows negotiations between the Mayor and central government, the FA, Brent Ccouncil and the London Development Agency (LDA) focusing on funding options for the stadium’s infrastructure. The money would otherwise have been paid by the FA as part of the stadium’s costs.

Livingstone said that the GLA will “work with the LDA to support more of the infrastructure costs required for the scheme”. He added: “This is a significant contribution to remove any remaining obstacles to going ahead with Wembley.

“We already have superior transport links in place with plans to improve them further, including, among other things, a new £90m state-of-the-art Wembley Park Station. The site already has planning permission and the scheme is ready to go. The last thing football needs is yet more delay.”
