Government to unveil plans for surgeries

The Department of Health will unveil plans today to rebuild hundred of GPs’ surgeries and health centres using money raised under PFI.

The plan will also involve profit sharing partnerships with health and local authorities.

Up to £1bn of private sector money could go into what will be known as Partnerships for Health.

The government has promised that 3,000 GPs’ premises will be rebuilt or refurbished by 2004.

The health department’s £175m contribution will buy out existing GPs’ or dentists’ leases and help with management costs.
