The DTLR’s Dr Paul Evans has taken the position of Southwark regeneration director, following Fred Manson’s decision to step down.
Evans was formerly head of urban policy at the DTLR, which drafted the Government’s flagship document on regeneration, the Urban White Paper, last year.
Southwark’s planning authority was recently held up by Lord Falconer as a “shining example” for others. “Southwark has had really imaginative planning officers in the past who have really gripped hold of a particular project and run with it – Tate Modern, for example. That’s the sort of spirit one wants,” Falconer said.
Manson, 57, joined Southwark in 1986 as borough architect, overseeing an ambitious programme of regeneration in the area. He was responsible for such projects as the Peckham Library and the redevelopment of Bankside, including Tate Modern.
