Friends of the Earth, the Council for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) and Transport 2000 have united in opposition to the Government’s proposed planning reforms.
In December’s planning green paper, the Government proposed that Parliament should decide the need for major infrastructure projects, such as power stations and airport terminals, with only the details of such schemes being considered at a more local level.
Kate Parminter, director of the CPRE, which is spearheading the campaign, said: “These proposals represent a further weakening of local democracy.”
In a bid to change the draft policy, the allies have set up a website at www.planningdisaster.co.uk, and are calling on all their members and supporters to flood the Prime Minister with letters.
The group has also placed several adverts in national newspapers showing a pleasant country scene emblazoned with the legend: “Your new power station goes here. (What colour would you like the gates?).”
