Plans to redevelop Lots Road power station in south west London as 500 flats have been rejected by Kensington and Chelsea council.
The council said that a proposed 130m-high tower was too tall for its location, and that there was not enough affordable housing, or an appropriate mix of uses.
Proposals for the 39-storey scheme, by developer Circadian (a joint venture between Taylor Woodrow and Hutchison Whampoa), was backed by English Heritage last year but has faced opposition from residents.
The scheme comprises two towers, one of 39 storeys and another of eight, which would rise above the former power station. The scheme’s 500 flats include 136 key worker flats.
On an adjacent site, which is located in Hammersmith and Fulham, the developer has proposed a third tower measuring 90m and comprising 51 flats over 25 storeys.
A decision on planning consent for this section of the development has yet to be announced.
Architect for the scheme is Sir Terry Farrell.
