BedZED wakes up British eco development market

The Beddington Zero Energy Development (BedZED) hailed as Britains first large-scale “eco-state” is due to be completed this spring.

A collaboration between environmental consulting company BioRegional and the Peabody Trust, the scheme is being built on a former sewage plant in Sutton.

The £12m project mixes family housing with live/work units. Each unit is packed with energy-saving design to create a carbon-free environment while an on-site shop sells organic produce to the residents.

The project aims to begin to address the need for more than 600,000 new homes in the London area over the next 10-15 years.
