Edinburgh Park on track for railway station

Edinburgh Park developer New Edinburgh has today applied for detailed planning permission for a railway station at the southern end of the Park.

The application, in partnership with Edinburgh council, is intended to deliver the station in 2003 with work beginning this autumn.

Malcolm Deans, executive director of New Edinburgh, said that the station would represent an investment of around £3m.

The proposed station is part of the new Edinburgh Park masterplan which was given “minded to grant” status in 2001, and which is expected to be fully green-lighted this year.

New Edinburgh expects Edinburgh Park to gain 2m sq ft (185,800 sq m) of office space over the next 10-15 years, so necessitating the creation of the railway station.

Following a public inquiry in January 2001, the Scottish Executive stipulated that transport provision at Edinburgh Park must improve before work on the scheme could proceed.

The Edinburgh Park station will provide a stop on the main line, opening up direct links to 14 stations in Edinburgh, West Lothian and central Scotland, as well as connections to stations further afield, in places such as Glasgow, Fife and Dundee.
