Government troubleshooter Lord Haskins has been charged with finding a new use for Yorkshire’s Selby coalfield, which is set for closure.
A spokesman for development agency Yorkshire Forward said: “The taskforce will look at all issues relating to the economic regeneration of the area.
“In the long term, that may include finding a use for the site.”
The taskforce will spend an initial £1.5m on assessing the impact of the closure and finding jobs for the coalfield’s 5,000 workers.
It will include representatives of:
- local councils
- Government Office for Yorkshire & Humber
- coalmining company UK Coal
- Yorkshire Forward

Selby covers 1,184 sq ft (110 sq m) and comprises five mines.
Northern Food chairman Lord Haskins has previously headed the Government’s red tape and foot & mouth taskforces.
