MP calls for Doncaster council planning investigation

An MP has called on the government to investigate Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council’s planning decisions, after it emerged that almost twice the national average were overturned on appeal.

Labour MP for Doncaster North, Kevin Hughes, wrote to local government minister Nick Raynsford to request an independent audit of the planning department.

The Planning Inspector’s report had revealed that 59% of appeals were allowed in Doncaster, compared with a national average of 36%.

Hughes said that something was “seriously wrong”, but the council has defended its record, saying it “compares quite well” with other authorities.
