Plans mooted for £21m Torquay makeover

Urban design consultancy Land Design Associates (LDA) has revealed plans for a £21m revamp of English Riviera resort Torquay in Devon.

LDA wants to regenerate the town harbour area with a mix of restaurants and cafés, as well as promenades and improved boat and marine facilities.

Land has also been set aside for waterfront housing by the scheme’s backers, Torbay council and the South West Regional Development Agency.

Bernie Foulkes, director of LDA, said: “The waterfront scheme will not only attract thousands of new visitors to Torquay, but should unlock further investment in the town.”

Plans include a £7.5m “Living Coasts” marine aviary, which will be run by Paignton Zoo.

Foulkes said: “It is going to be an exciting project, based on outside living, which will rival existing popular waterfront areas anywhere in Europe.”

The regeneration scheme is partly financed by the European Regional Development Fund and work is expected to start next summer.
