Associated British Ports is negotiating with three customers for a new coal-import terminal that it could build at Immingham, on Humberside.
It is also talking to potential customers for the Dibden Bay container terminal in Southampton.
It reported interim pretax profits up from £66.4m to £66.9m on turnover up from £202.1m to £213.7m.
It is looking to invest £1bn in its operations over the next eight to ten years.
