Macdonald Hotels has submitted plans for an £18m, 156-bedroom hotel at the centre of Sheffield’s “Heart of the City” regeneration project.
The “four-and-a-half star” hotel will be built on the site formerly occupied by a 1970s-built extension to the town hall, on the corners of Norfolk Street and Surrey Street, in the “Heart of the City” area.
The 155,264 sq ft (14,424 sq m) hotel will include:
- a business centre
- a 500-person function & conference facility
- a 9,473 sq ft (880 sq m) fitness centre with swimming pool
- 9,580 sq ft (890 sq m) of restaurants and bars, opening on to the Winter Garden
- a public walkway linking the hotel to the Winter Garden and the city’s Peace Gardens
The £120m Heart of the City project, which covers 10 acres (4ha), includes the Millennium Galleries, the Winter Garden and a four-to-five-acre (1.6-2ha) commercial element comprising two office schemes, Howden House and Derwent House.
The application will be considered by the council’s planning committee on 17 February.
