Strategic Rail Authority ‘committed to developing Crossrail’

The Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) has insisted that Crossrail remains a long-term commitment, but has admitted that financing and route options have not been finalised.

The SRA said in the update of its Strategic Plan, published today, that it was “preparing the business case for this major project”, which it acknowledges underpins London mayor Ken Livingstone’s London Plan.

But it adds: “No decisions have been taken on the specification of the project, including its route. The SRA is committed to developing Crossrail Line One as a partner with Transport for London (TfL) in Cross London Rail Links, using funds ring-fenced by government.

“No commitment has yet been made to fund the project, and no such decision can be taken until the costs and benefits of a defined option are known.”

Cross London Rail Links, the jv set up between SRA and TfL, will present its final proposals to government next month.

Meanwhile, stumbling blocks were this week put in the way of two other major infrastructure projects in London.

The government told Railtrack to redraw its plans for Thameslink 2000, to show how the project would impact on conservation areas and on the concourses of London Bridge and Blackfriars stations.

Also, Tower Hamlets council has insisted that London Underground must submit a new planning application for the demolition of the Bishopsgate Goodsyard, which is a key element in the East London Line extension.
