Campaigners fighting to preserve Spitalfields Market, E1, have launched a fresh legal challenge against its redevelopment.
Spitalfields Market Under Threat (SMUT) has instructed Cambridge-based solicitor Richard Buxton, an environmental specialist, to bring the case against Tower Hamlets.
If a judicial review is successful it could force Hammerson’s Spitalfields Development Group (SDG) and the Corporation of London to apply for a new planning consent for the Norman Foster-designed 800,000 sq ft (74,320 sq m) office and retail development at Bishop’s Square.
SMUT claims that the council used the wrong figures to show how much bigger the SDG scheme was than the Liffe headquarters, which received consent in 1997.
