British Waterways’ project to reopen the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals in Scotland has won the Royal Town Planning Institute’s highest planning award, the Silver Jubilee Cup.
The £78m Millennium Link project, which includes the famous Falkirk Wheel as well as plans for the regeneration of Edinburgh Quay, is part funded by the Millennium Commission.
It was one of 19 finalists for the RTPI Planning Awards 2002.
The judges said: “The whole project – whilst innovative in its own right – has also served to promote regeneration and helped to realise new development opportunities across the region. It fully deserves to win the pinnacle of planning awards.”
John Billingham, chairman of the judging panel, said: “The vision and collaboration shown by all involved has enabled the Millennium Link Project to become a key regeneration catalyst.
“The potential is immense, and the future of the area is looking good.”
Other awards went to plans for Warrington Town Centre and Dublin Temple Bar’s West End.
