House of Fraser sees Reading’s Oracle as good omen

House of Fraser this week confirmed that it will anchor BICC Development’s 600,000 sq ft (55,740m2) Oracle shopping centre in Reading.

BICC is about to submit a planning application for the scheme, which is scheduled to open by Christmas 1998.

The retailer’s managing director, Andrew Jennings, said: “We are delighted to have obtained the prime spot in this exciting new development.”

Local agents have also welcomed the news. Vail Williams’ Chris Cave commented: “Fraser’s new store will provide added impetus to the development proposals, as well as much needed variety and competition to the town’s principal John Lewis department store – Heelas.”

  • House of Fraser has just announced pretax losses of £4.3m in the 26 weeks to July 29. Sales dropped from £326m to £323m.
