Kingston council has produced a shortlist of five for a key leisure site next to the A3 at Tolworth.
The developers are Rank, THI Developments, Morrisons and Marylebone Warwick Balfour, First Leisure, and Salmon Harvester.
Each wants to build a leisure scheme, including a multiplex cinema and linked facilities, on 2.7ha (6.7 acres) at King George’s Playing Fields next to the Kingston bypass. The successful bidder will also have to provide the council with a new swimming pool and an all-weather pitch.
“It’s a very prominent site, with a very high catchment population,” said Salmon Harvester director Doug Stewart. “There’s very strong occupier demand.”
