Tyne & Wear Development Corporation has shortlisted three consortia for a £200m development of a 200-acre site at Royal Quays, North Tyneside.
The chosen three are: the Royal Quays Development Consortium including London & Edinburgh Trust; Federation of Community Urban Specialists including Barratt Newcastle and Ideal Homes; and McAlpine including Sir Robert McAlpine and Rockfort Group.
Their proposals for Royal Quays include business and industrial space, up to 1,500 homes, shops, a school, and a range of leisure facilities such as a hotel, arena, indoor ski centre and sports village.
TWDC has asked the developers to produce detailed schemes and will choose the preferred team in August. The scheme could be completed by the mid- to late 1990s.
An historic agreement was signed by TWDC and the Port of Tyne Authority last November containing an option for TWDC to purchase and develop the 200-acre site currently owned by the Port.
Meanwhile, TWDC has also shortlisted two developers for the 86-acre Huylton Riverside site in Sunderland.
Bride Hall Developments and London & Edinburgh Trust with Washington Developments have been asked to produce detailed proposals for a 400,000-sq ft business and innovation park and 100,000 sq ft of shopping for presentation to the corporation this summer.
Work on a £4m reclamation and infrastructure package is already under way at the site, a former colliery.
