It is hard to say which has seen more personnel changes over the last year, the England football team or the property specialists in City stockbroking houses.
Among property analysts, it has been mainly a case of familiar faces donning a new strip: Morgan Grenfell’s lads transferred en masse to CL-Alexanders Laing & Cruickshank when the former pulled out of UK securities; after L Messel did the same, Alan Carter, Gareth Evans and Alastair Gunn surfaced first at Chase Securities and next at Charterhouse Tilney.
Smith New Court re-entered the league, luring Adam Murza and Will Martin from Citicorp Scrimgeour Vickers, David Jones from Morgan Grenfell and David Tunstall from BZW. (Rumours of Maradona-size transfer fees are hotly denied …); BZW in turn scooped up the two-man CL-Alexanders Laing & Cruickshank team and striker Alex Moss from Hoare Govett.
Then, too, other well-known players have retired from the game or moved on: Bob Ringrose switched into corporate finance at Phillips & Drew; John Appleby, Warburg’s property team captain, retired early; and Naresh Gudka left Citicorp Scrimgeour Vickers to play part-time for Banque Paribas Capital Markets.
Confused? To help you remember who plays for whom, we have listed the main London teams right. The line-up was accurate at the time of printing, but we cannot rule out last-minute substitutions …
