Further expansion of the activities of the College of Estate Management is detailed in the annual report and accounts of the college for 1987(*). There have been more new courses, large numbers attending CALUS activities, study tours in new parts of the world, more educational videos, wider distribution of college publications to postal students, additional academic staff, and, inevitably, additional problems of accommodation.
The CEM board says that perhaps the most significant step forward has been the final approval granted by the RICS to the college’s diploma in surveying, which is now a fully exempting examination in three consecutive parts. The first entry in September 1986 attracted 250 students and there is strong support for the second.
To existing CEM courses for the RICS, ISVA and other professional bodies, the college has recently added a full range of courses for the Chartered Institute of Building, and the Inland Revenue Valuation Office has asked the college to provide a special course for assistant valuers.
There has also been more specialisation on key topics. The college already provides courses for the RICS diplomas in project management and property marketing, and a third, in property investment, started in December 1987. A new diploma in shopping centre management is to be launched soon.
