St Modwen double

As St Modwen Properties apply to redevelop 8 acres at Newcastle under Lyme, the company are also starting to build a shopping centre in Burton on Trent.

St Modwen have unveiled their proposals for the future of 7 3/4 acres of Newcastle under Lyme’s centre – just two months after the council dispensed with the services of MEPC and their plans for the mainly council-owned site.

The scheme envisaged by St Modwen – which has an estimated capital value of £20m – could provide 150,000 sq ft of retail space, restaurant facilities and 750 parking spaces.

Plans for the site, bounded by Market Lane, Iron Lane and Barracks Lane, have been developed in consultation with the council. A decision on the outline planning application is expected within the next few months.

Elsewhere in Staffordshire, St Modwen are to start the construction of the 200,000-sq ft Octagon Centre on its freehold 12-acre site in the centre of Burton on Trent.

This follows an agreement with Argyll Stores to provide a 50,000-sq ft Safeway superstore on a 999-year lease, scheduled for opening in early December.

The shopping centre, which will have a capital value of £25m, will also have 35 shops which are due to be trading by December 1989.

Clive Lewis & Partners are agents on both schemes with Bennett & Days acting as joint agents on the proposed Newcastle under Lyme development.
