Asda have teamed up with Smiths Industries and submitted a detailed planning application to redevelop Smiths’ site at Roehampton Vale, Putney, for an 80,000-sq ft superstore, with 600 parking spaces.
The site, about 7 acres, is known locally as the KLG Works. It contains about 100,000 sq ft of factory space where Smiths currently manufacture aero engine ignition products, a sports ground and a car park.
If the superstore plan is approved, Smiths will sell the site to Asda and transfer to smaller and more modern premises. The company currently employ about 250, and are actively interested in several sites in Wandsworth. For their part, Asda are proposing major road improvements to Roehampton Vale, including a new underpass for traffic access.
Wandsworth’s brief for the site favours industrial use and retaining the sports ground. The council is presently consulting on the proposals and will not be considering the application until April or May.
