The mystery buyer behind the £17m purchase of 10 New Fetter Lane, EC1, has emerged as publishing magnate Robert Maxwell.
The building was sold by W H Smith, as we reported on March 11. However, agents for the 75,320-sq ft block, Edward Erdman and Montagu Evans & Son, were under pain of a writ not to name names — and they are sticking to their guns.
The former Smith’s block backs on to Mr Maxwell’s holding in the Holborn area. The Mirror building at 33 Holborn is joined to Orbit House, 9 New Fetter Lane, by a bridge.
It is understood that Maxwell is centralising his holdings — Maxwell House, Worship Street, EC2, is being closed, with staff relocating to Holborn and Watford. Whether the vacated building comes on to the open market remains to be seen.
