Vigers sell after hours

McEvoy Vigers’ latest auction in Glasgow was dominated by entries from the Co-operative Wholesale Society. The Co-op put up 25 lots, 18 of which sold, nine of them afterwards.

Shaun Vigers of the auctioneers said the reason for the high number of after sales was that for a number of the properties there were only one or two interested parties in the room, making it difficult to reach the reserve. “People were prepared to pay the figures the vendor wanted after the sale, though,” according to Mr Vigers.

As we reported in our preview on June 7, most of the Co-op lots were vacant shops, surplus to their current requirements.

Among the lots to go in the room was 28 Leven Road, Kinlockleven, Highland Region, a vacant shop and store “with conversion potential”, which sold for £10,000.

A vacant retail/workshop building at 105 Station Road, Douglas West, Strathclyde, on a 0.5-acre site, was knocked down at just £1,000. However, the property is in need of repair and is currently boarded up.

British Rail Property Board were also among the vendors at the auction, putting up 14 lots. Among these were a number of vacant sites including 1,065 acres in Easterhouse Road, Easterhouse, Glasgow. The land is considered suitable for “light industrial or open storage purposes” and was knocked down at £2,500.

At Station Road, Mauchline, Strathclyde, a 2.8-acre partly-vacant site sold for £15,000. About half of the land is let at £275 pa, although the lease expires in 1992. The site could be suitable for residential development, according to the auctioneers.

The sale realised £365,850 in all.
