The older fabric

A new reference work on historic farm buildings — originally intended to assist ADAS offers — has now become generally available.

Entitled Historic Farms Buildings Study: Sources of Information, this MAFF book:

  • describes the importance of old farm buildings and the development of interest in them;
  • presents the first detailed review and conclusions on the number, age and type of such buildings in England and Wales;
  • lists published and institutional sources of information, current research, old farm buildings accessible to the public, and relevant organisations.

Though primarily aimed at helping the Ministry’s officers advise on the historical content of farm buildings and on their conservation, the study should also be of real interest to land agents, architects, conservationists, historians, planners, landowners, and farmers who own and use old buildings.

Sources of Information is the first publication of the Historic Farms Buildings Study, which is funded by MAFF and administered by the Council for British Archaeology. It has been written by Nigel Harvey, a well-known authority in the field and a former farm buildings advisory officer with the Ministry.

Copies, price £5 post free, from Miss Frances Campbell, Principal Architect, MAFF, Room 412a, Great Westminster House, Horseferry Road, London SW1P 2AE. Cheques should be made payable to MAFF.
