J Kerr Kirkwood BSc FRICS CAAV retired this month as senior partner of Thimbleby & Shorland, the Reading-based auctioneering and agency firm with which his family has been associated for 60 years – his father, John Kirkwood, joined the firm in 1927 and they were partners together for 11 years.
Kerr Kirkwood himself was a partner for 33 years, the last 12 as senior partner, having joined the firm in 1948 after obtaining his BSc degree in agriculture from Reading University: he became a member of the old CA&EAI in 1951. Closely associated with both the RICS and the Berks & Oxon Agricultural Valuers Association, he is also well known for his close connections with the dairy industry as both auctioneer and adviser, having officiated at sales for the English Guernsey Cattle Society and the Ayrshire Clubs Committee – among many others – and served on the committees and councils of a broad range of cattle-breeders organisations.
