Scottish Widows has been given the go-ahead to split Debenhams’ old store in Coney Street, York, into three shops.
Tim Smith, of letting agent Grimley, said: “This scheme will offer an exciting opportunity to trade in a restored listed building. Ultimately, it will act as a catalyst for the future regeneration of this end of Coney Street.”
Debenhams quit the city three years ago, since when the building has been occupied by a string of temporary traders. Retailers are already keen to secure the units. Smith added: “Scottish Widows and its architect, Thompson Spencer Partnership, have been talking to the planners for some time to agree a conversion which will restore the building to its original splendour.” Rents are likely to touch £100 zone A.
