Court ranks tourism above beauty

The Rank Organisation has won its High Court battle for permission to build a £100m holiday village in Lyminge Forest, near Folkestone. The forest is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, and local campaigners had challenged a planning inspector’s decision in favour of the development.

Arguments put forward by the Department of National Heritage and the English Tourist Board that a national need had been identified for more holiday villages were upheld by the judge.
