These dry statistics, spread over 25 years, when taken together tell a remarkable story. Like it or loathe it, this, the last and largest of Britain’s new towns, has been a notable achievement. What was a tiny and obscure village is now the name of the city of Milton Keynes.
Today it has its own railway station, a vast central shopping building and market, a marina, a peace pagoda, a university and miles and miles of roads.
And, above all, it has the trade and industry which the town was intended to attract or create when it was originally designated. One cynic recently described the result as “the biggest business park in the world”, but let the pictures tell the story.
