Burton Park’s group facelift

by Tony Hazell

Four developers have come together to provide 48 homes in the Grade II listed 61ha (150 acre) Burton Park in West Sussex.

Michael J Wilson has restored Burton House, a Grade I listed mansion, and divided it into 12 two-, three- and four-bedroom flats. The developer has also refurbished five listed cottages in the mansion’s stableyard.

The apartments are being marketed by Hamptons International at prices from £300,000 to £500,000, and the cottages have guide prices of £175,000 to £225,000.

The other developers on site are Alfred McAlpine Homes, Bondlands and Bewley Homes.

Bondlands is converting Burton Court, next to the mansion house, into nine three- and four-bedroom homes with guide prices of £275,000 to £300,000.

Alfred McAlpine Homes is restoring and developing the Walled Garden, near the mansion house, which originally formed the centrepiece of the grounds. The development will comprise 10 three- and four-bedroom cottages built around a courtyard with guide prices of £235,000 to £285,000.

Bewley Homes is recreating the ancient hamlet of Lodge Green. It will comprise 12 properties ranging from a 16th-century two-bedroom cottage, a seven-bedroom lodge house and seven new-built homes with four and five bedrooms.

Burton House was built in 1831 in parkland 3 miles outside Petworth.

Michael Wilson said that the conversion is “the perfect solution for such a large important building. The ultimate 12 joint owners will guarantee its future in terms of maintenance and care”.
