Dawnay Day jv secures Debenhams for Newport scheme

Rhys (Newport) has confirmed Debenhams as anchor tenant at its 450,000 sq ft (41,805 sq m) redevelopment of the Kingsway shopping centre, Newport, South Wales.

As tipped by EGi in February, the joint venture between Dawnay Day and investment bank Lehman Brothers has signed Debenhams for a 75,000 sq ft (6,967 sq m) store on three levels.

Other elements of the £100m scheme, which will double the size of Kingsway, include:

  • a 75,000 sq ft (6,967 sq m) food store
  • an 84-bedroom hotel
  • 74 flats
  • and 15,000 sq ft (1,393 sq m) of leisure

London-based Haskoll is the architect on the scheme.

Rhys (Newport) is being advised by Donaldsons, the letting agent for the centre.

King Sturge acted for Newport council.

A Rhys (Newport) spokesman said: “The arrival of Debenhams signals a vote of confidence for the scheme and a boost for Newport city centre as a whole.

“We are now one step closer to getting this project off the ground and aim to complete the scheme during 2006.”
