OFT tackles unfair tenancy terms

Unfair terms have been cut from standard tenancy contracts following reforms by the industry and the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).

The OFT worked with the Association of Residential Letting Agents, the Residential Landlords Association and the RICS over the past 18 months to make their standard tenancy agreements, used by most private landlords, fairer and clearer.

Terms that required tenants to pay for damages not caused by them and that required them to pay for professional cleaning instead of doing it themselves, along with a term that bound the tenant to the terms of the landlord’s insurance which the tenant may not have seen, were removed or revised.
