The Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) has approved plans for St George to work on London’s first privately built and funded station for several decades on the site of the old Sands End gas works between Chelsea and Fulham.
The property company will put up £1.75m to fund Imperial Wharf station’s construction although it will ultimately belong to Network Rail.
Hammersmith & Fulham council made the station a condition of the planning permission for the Imperial Wharf residential, leisure and office complex St George is developing.
Station construction will start and finish next year. Another station approved by the SRA, White City, will be built in 2007, paid for by Chelsfield.
