Three schemes passed after Liverpool student housing review

Three student residential schemes have been approved in Liverpool, following a review of the city centre’s student accommodation provision.

The three are:

  • Parkmoor’s development on London Road, opposite Royal Liverpool University Hospital; the scheme has been scaled back to 418 beds from 658 beds by cutting the size of its towers from six, eight and 10 storeys to five storeys throughout
  • Moorfield Group’s 590-bed, 11-storey scheme on Prescott Street, on which the original design has been slightly modified
  • phase three of a 162-bed scheme at David McLean’s Marybone student accommodation complex on Titherbarn Street

The three applications were withdrawn from the agenda of May’s council planning committee meeting, pending a review of student accommodation in the city centre by the council and urban regeneration company Liverpool Vision, which has now been completed.

Both bodies had expressed concern about possible over-supply and the concentration of students in certain areas of the city centre.

Some councillors from all parties have called for a ban on further student developments in parts of the city.

Liverpool’s educational facilities include: Liverpool University, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool Hope University College, Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Liverpool Community College.
