South Wales Police HQ to be built in Cardiff Bay area

South Wales Police is to press ahead with plans for a 100,000 sq ft Cardiff headquarters in the city’s Bay area after a search of other suitable sites drew a blank.

It intends to relocate from Cardiff’s historic Cathays Park district and build a new office and custody suite complex on the site of its Butetown station.

The Butetown station is best known for having policed the Tiger Bay area for the last century.

The force had also looked at refurbishing its existing headquarters in Cathays Park as well as developing on brownfield sites in the Bay and North Cardiff.

Cardiff planners are due to give the Butetown scheme the go-ahead later today.
