Cornwall still in line for Objective One grant

Only Cornwall has been proposed for support for the next phase of Objective One funding, according to provisional figures the European Commission has published today.

Cornwall is set to receive another £50m a year in the new round for 2007-13. West Wales and Merseyside would have still qualified for the next tranche of grants if it were not for the accession of 10 new states to the European Union in May, the figures suggest.

The Financial Times says the figures will reignite the debate about the capacity of structural funds to regenerate deprived areas.
