Winkworth beats jitters with 89% in London

Winkworth defied expectations of poor turnout when its London auction raised £6.1m from the sale of 89% of its 170 lots.

Auctioneer Robin Wilson said that there was “a good strong room” at the auction last Wednesday, in spite of it being held “in the middle of the school holidays, on a Jewish holiday and between two bank holidays”.

“Our catalogue distribution was slightly lower than usual, as were the legal requests, so we had some concerns,” he admitted.

“But the room stayed full for four-and-a-half hours and we were very pleased with the money raised and with what sold,” he added.

Although “the indications were that the market is levelling just a fraction,” he said that prices “held up”.

“Where we really achieved prices higher than anticipated was on properties in London with development opportunities,” he continued.

Wilson cited the first lot of the day as an example. A previously squatted house in Churchill Road, Cricklewood, NW2 was reserved at £125,000 but was knocked down for £181,500.
