The controversial gambling bill, soon to be debated in the House of Lords, has changed out of all recognition from the rosy vision of the UK industry outlined by Sir Alan Budd in his gambling white paper of four years ago, writes the Financial Times.
UK gaming operators such as Rank, Stanley Leisure, London Clubs International and Gala are furious about the transformation of the bill into something of a “damp squib”, writes the paper.
Gone are provisions allowing operators to install more slot machines and only 24 new properties will be permitted because of government concerns about problem gambling.
The changes have hit development plans. Gala and joint venture partner Harrah’s Entertainment dropped plans to develop casinos in the UK after the government’s latest introduction of restrictions.
