The Law Commission has announced its ninth programme of law reform, to begin on 1 April 2005.
This year’s initiatives will include a review of three property-related areas of law: housing, feudal land and property interests in investment securities.
The housing review will examine the current law on illegal eviction and harassment by landlords.
The feudal land project aims to modernise the surviving, and often complex, elements of ancient land law.
The investment securities review will highlight ways in which the law can re-align itself with current trading practice.
In addition to the new initiatives, the Commission will continue to work on several ongoing projects carried over from the eighth programme of law reform. These include reviews of the current law relating to:
● termination of tenancies (final report and draft bill expected end of 2005);
● easements and land obligation (consultation paper expected end of 2005);
● forfeiture and succession (draft report and bill expected July 2005);
● renting homes (draft bill due for publication mid-2005); and
● resolving housing disputes (consultation paper expected summer 2005, final report and draft bill in 2007.)
