MAKE makes the grade in Mailbox design competition

Ken Shuttleworth’s MAKE has been chosen to design the final phase of The Mailbox in Birmingham.

MAKE’s £60m proposal beat five other shortlisted architects including: Glenn Howells, Marks Barfield, D5, Kinetic AIU and Associated Architects .

The 17-storey scheme to be known as The Cube will provide about another 390,000 sq ft of space at the 1.5m sq ft mixed-use scheme, which is already home to the BBC and a Malmaison hotel.

Plans for The Cube have yet to be finalised, but are likely to include 60,000 sq ft of shops, 25,000 sq ft of restaurants and bars, 60,000 sq ft -100,000 sq ft of residential space, 50,000 sq ft -100,000 sq ft of offices and a small boutique hotel.

A planning application will be lodged shortly and letting agents are to be appointed within the next few weeks.

If all goes to schedule, work will start on site at the start of 2006, with completion in 2007.
