Flash floods cause devastation in N Yorks

Floods have caused devastation between Thirsk and Helmsley in North Yorkshire.

Landslides demolished buildings that had stood for more than 200 years. Twenty houses and shops were flooded and several suffered structural damage in the village of Helmsley alone.

The Environment Agency said the effects of climate change might bring weather damage to places which had not previously been regarded as vulnerable.

NFU Mutual says the flash floods on Sunday might lead to claims worth more than £5m for damage to farms and country properties.
