Rupert Murdoch’s News International has gained consent for a 1.1m sq ft hi-tech printworks development in Waltham Cross, north London.
Broxbourne council approved the plans last night, subject to completion of a section 106 planning obligation to secure a range of benefits for the local community.
News International, the owner of The Sun, The Times, The Sunday Times and News of the World newspapers, proposes hi-tech printing presses, office facilities, industrial and storage facilities, plus a hotel and restaurant.
Councillor Paul Mason, chairman of Broxbourne planning and licensing committee, said:
“In order to minimise any impact upon the amenity of neighbouring properties the applicant made significant amendments to their original scheme – reducing the size of the building, increasing a landscape buffer and stipulating that all deliveries will be made on the western side of the print works, further away from residential properties.”
Under the section 106 agreement the council will seek a footbridge over the railway line, a financial contribution towards the environmental improvement of Waltham Cross town centre, and a financial contribution to assist the local workforce in seeking job opportunities and improving skills.
News International’s proposals followed its October confirmation that it was to move its printing press from its 14-acre Wapping site, allowing editorial staff to move to a 506,000 sq ft tower on the Wapping site.
The tower was designed by Terry Farrell & Partners and is being considered by Tower Hamlets council.
