The potential for SDLT returns to be processed incorrectly will be significantly reduced from 30 September, when HMRC will begin rejecting case management software returns that do not contain the new two-dimensional barcode.
The barcode, which appears on each page of the electronically-generated SDLT1 form, enables HMRC to read the data electronically by scanning and extracting the information contained within it.
30 September will also mark the withdrawal of HMRCs “print and post” service, which allows for SDLT forms to be completed on screen only. After this date there will be a 30-day run-down period to enable existing users to complete “in progress” returns. This service will close on 30 October.
The option to return hand-written responses on pre-printed forms will remain available, alongside the two-dimensional bar-coded form. In addition, HMRC will launch a new on-line filing system in September, which permits both the completion and submission of forms online.
Full details of the online filing system will appear on the HMRC’s website in the next few weeks.
