Associated British Ports is mulling over a third large expansion scheme on the River Humber.
It would be destined for a site at Hull, directly on the river, rather than behind the locks that form the entrance to most of the existing port.
The company is also building a £27.5m roll-on, roll-off ferry terminal on the Humber and it is working on a second, the £59.5m phase of the Humber International Terminal for coal.
The government is minded to approve plans for a £30m-£35m container terminal at Hull.
The news came on the announcement of interim pretax profit up from £17.5m to £67m on revenue down from £251m to £243m.
