The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) will appeal to the nation today to stand up and fight for the protection of the countryside or risk losing most of it within 30 years.
Its new report, Your Countryside Your Choice, calls for at least 75% of new housing to be built on brownfield sites with an average density of 40 homes for every 2.5 acres.
It wants a regional policy devised that respects environmental capacity rather than pushes for maximum development in all parts of the country and it wants the policy of “predict and provide” for national and regional airport capacity ended.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said it did not share the CPRE’s “Doomsday” scenario but ministers welcomed debate.
