Welsh university unveils £35m expansion plans

The University of Glamorgan has unveiled a £35m expansion plan which involves merging with Merthyr Tydfil College of Further Education.

The plans, which have still to be approved by the Welsh Assembly Government, include a new campus in Cardiff city centre.

The campus, to be based in a refurbished building next to Queen Street railway station, would be home to a new school of creative and cultural industries.

Final designs for the building, expected to open in September 2007, have yet to be drawn up.

Education Learning Wales (Elwa) support the plans. It is hoped, after two-years of talks, the institutions will combine in April 2006.

The University, which has 20,000 students, said the development was part of its drive to expand its presence in the valleys.

An upgrade of many of the university’s existing buildings is also included.
