Root cause of Buncefield blast remains a mystery

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have still not identified the root cause of the Buncefield fuel depot blast in Hemel Hempstead in December.

The explosion destroyed 20 businesses and damaged another 60 buildings so badly they remain unusable.

Evidence so far points to the formation of a flammable mixture of petrol, or similar spirit, and air, that ignited, but the HSE does not know what the ignition sources were. It still needs to find out if the blast was a freak or not.

The HSE has announced targeted inspections of other fuel storage sites.
